A Wish
With this, the last of 14 albums released during his lifetime, world-music legend Hamza El Din produced seven new masterworks. Dedicated to Toshka, the village of his birth flooded over three decades ago by the Aswan High Dam project, A Wish is Hamza’s prayer for the remembrance of his home.Â
Joined by cellist Joan Jeanrenaud (formerly of Kronos Quartet), composer and pianist W. A. Mathieu, Jordanian percussionist Hani Naser, Japanese diva Shizuru Ohtaka, and others, Hamza’s mastery of the oud is as undeniable as ever. In his longing for home, he has kept the voice of his village alive with the quiet virtuosity of his playing, and has created a worthy addition to the musical heritage of humanity.
